The following information was obtained from the Washington Library Geneology room on 19 Mar 1983. Harbuck, Harbach - The Old German name Auerbach is a place designation denoting "stream of the aurocks." The aurock is an extinct European bison.Persons bearing the surnames were probably former residents of one of two town in Germany which now bear the name.Heinrich Auerbach, born at the town of Auerbach, Bavaria, in 1482, was a famous medical professor who built Auerbach's Keller, a wine cellar in Leipsig which is famous from its connection with the Faust legends and with the academic years of the German author Goethe. Johann Gottfried Auerbach, 1697-1753, was a noted German painter.Auerbach is also found in the Northern part of France as a surname. There are very many variations in this place name. It is found in England and Germany as Harbach, in Holland as Horbach, and in this country as Harbach, Harbock, Harbuck and Horbach.
