hardage, SC and beyond
All Hardage researchers;I've run across many people researching our name and we all seem to have the same problem. We can't document any ancestors earlier than about 1790. The first probable suspects were William and Thomas HARDIGE in MD and VA in the 1600's who were big buddies with the early Washingtons William returned to Bristol, Eng where he died and his tomb is inscribedas HARDICH....that's pretty close to HARDAGE. Actually the fellow who chiseled the name forgot to put the tail on the "R" and it reads "Lt. Colonel William HAPDICH" Most of you should know a bit about him and his brother Thomas. If you haven't seen any of that info I'll post some of it later. The problem with it is that the name soon was being spelled about as many ways as a class of modern "phonic" spellers would come up with, ...as you probably know. And, of coarse, the name HARDWICK has pretty much predominated in earlier researcher's published works. Of that tracable line from Thomas Hardige, one of his decendants, Hazzle Hardridge ended up in SC by 1770 or so. There are scattered records of HARDAGES in some of the early colonial records who are most likely related to that HARDWICK line.So far I haven't found the KEY connecting us/we? contemporary Hardages to that line. Here's what I know:From SC abt 1790 thru 1820, the following Hardages started westward and can be traced.First, (in alphabetical order)ZACHARIAH HARDAGE settled in Lincoln County, TN;Next, WILLIAM HARDAGE shows up in records in Green County, GA.;ADAM HARDAGE settled in Upson County, GA.;and finally, my gggrandfather, JOHN THOMAS HARDAGE and his 3 brothers, JAMES D.HARDAGE, JESSE DANIEL HARDAGE and GEORGE WASHINGTON HARDAGE settled in Hall County, GA. All these people are the same generation, so if anyone wants to join this forum lets please consider this our FIRST GENERATION. We can work backwards from here.
In addition to these HARDAGES, there appeared a line of Creek Indians with the last name HARDRIDGE. This name has prevailed in most information I've found on Creek Indians except during the Civil War 3 of them spelled their name HARDAGE. All 3 of them were in the same 1st Creek Mounted Volunteers, a Confederate Unit formed by McIntosh along with a Cherokee Indian Unit. They fought out on the Western front. They were Corp. LEWIS HARDAGE,Capt. YOUNG HARDAGE and Pvt. WARRIOR HARDAGE.
I've corresponded with many decendants of this "First Generation" so let's all get together and find our earlier folks.Mike [email protected]
