Hello. I don't know about it beinga fanciful theory. It was recorded by James Hardiman, keeper of the public records and member of the Irish Academy and his own papers in are the British Library. Also, if the 1370 Norman was the progenitor of the Hardiman name then the Hardiman name and all variants would exist in greater numbers (See Spencer)in the descendants than they have since the early 1840s when Matheson documented Irish Names spread. Unless of course there was a potoato blight which attacked only Hardiman genes which would account for the Norman diminishment. Now that's fanciful.
I dont doubt the Norman influx but there would be no need for a Norman to change his name into Gaelic. It would stay Norman then be angliscied. The matter of Hargodain into hardiman is a matter of public record, not of fancy.
