Clare,
As I mentioned in my earlier message, I am interested in the parents of Mary Jane Paul who married James Hardwich. I do not know if they married in New York or in England. Do not have enough details yet to research back into England.

The father of Mary Jane Paul is "the other George Paul" that lived in Skaneateles, Onondaga County, New York. Not sure if he was widowed in England or in New York. In addition to Mary Jane Paul, there are about five other Paul children that came with him to New York. He married widowed Phebe Gregory in 1855 in Skaneateles. She too was from somewhere in England. This "other George Paul" died in 1891 and was buried in Skaneateles.

My husband's great-great grandfather was George Paul Sr. He was born somewhere in Somersetshire, England almost the same time as "the other George Paul". George Paul Sr. married Mary Brass in Durston Parish, Somersetshire in 1823. At that time he was of Isle Abbotts Parish, Somersetshire. Their nine children were born and baptized (christened) in Isle Abbotts. The entire family came to the United States in 1844, settling first in New York (perhaps Skaneateles). Then they went to Illinois. After the death of his first wife in July 1870, George Paul Sr. returned to New York. In January 1871 he married Hannah Paul, widow of John French. Hannah Paul and John French were married in 1825 in Isle Abbotts. After her death George Paul Sr. married his third wife, widowed Sarah Adams. Sarah had married her first two husbands in Isle Abbotts. George Paul Sr. died in 1881 and was buried in Skaneateles.

It is our hope that finding out where "the other George Paul" came from in England might give us some clues to find the parents of our George Paul Sr. There are a multitude of George Paul individuals born in Somersetshire about the same time as ours. Shifting out information as to which one fits is extremely difficult.

Hence the interest in James Hardwich who married Jane Paul. He was born about 1822/1825 in England. Do not know his parents nor where in England. Do you have this James Hardwich among the ones you have found in Somersetshire?

Where in Somersetshire are the Hardwidge families that you are related to? Is it anywhere near Durston and Isle Abbotts? Durston is north and a little east of Taunton, maybe five miles or so. Isle Abbotts is more south of Taunton and also a little east, less than ten miles it appears.
