Descendants of James Jay Hargis & Mary Anderson...
My ancestor Peter Burrow Hargis is thought to be the son of James Jay Hargis & Mary Anderson. I have seen this information quite a lot on this and several other lists. However, I need to find PROOF of this lineage. James Jay Hargis is a proven son of William HARGIS who was in the Rev. War.
I have been informed by several researchers that Peter's parents were James Jay Hargis & Mary Anderson. But no one has told me where they got the proof.
A fact that I do have is that Peter married Frances Bohannon. Frances' sister Catherine married William Hargis (another son of James Jay Hargis, and probable brother of Peter). (I do have a copy of William & Catherine's Bible, listing their children and important dates.) It was not uncommon for two sisters to marry two brothers.
I am already a member of the DAR through Peter's wife Frances Bohannon....through her grandfather William. I would love to add William Hargis as a supplement, as Hargus is my maiden name. However, that is not the most important reason I want to find proof. I want to be able to connect further up the Hargis line. I want the history for my children, and grandchildren. I want truth....not just hearsay.
Another of my lines is doing the DNA study, whereby MALES of a certain line can be traced back to their ancestors. (It would be easier if females could do this too, but unfortunately that isn't how it works.) A male from the Hargis line (James J. & Mary Anderson descendant is who I am looking for) would receive the kit, swab saliva from his cheek and put it into the container received and mail it back to the lab. Another Hargis descendant from my line...I have 3 brothers, a father, and 2 uncles who would gladly help with this...would do the same. If the DNA matches, or close match, then that would help prove that they have an ancestor in common...James Jay Hargis. This would help prove (or disprove) that Peter was James' son. The lab would give us test results, with their results.
DNA testing cost, but I and at least one other researcher that I know would be willing to pay for the testing. I am hoping to get my uncle and brothers to help also. It would help prove or disprove our case, and also help others of this line to be able to know FOR SURE that they are on the right track in their research. I only need one proven MALE descendant of this line.
I am looking for a MALE HARGIS descendant of one of these lines:
The sons of James Jay Hargis and Mary Anderson are (per 1850 Jackson Tn census):
1*. William married to Catherine Bohannon (sis to Frances who m. Peter)
2. John who married Pamelia Carter (per census info) had 4 daughters,
2 sons Govnor Shelby and Jefferson D, no further info
3. Jefferson married 1st Jane Connell, married 2nd Isabella (?)
had 3 daughters, 2 sons James & William by Jane
4. Porter (no further info)
5. Solomon m. Parilee (?) 2 daughters, one son George, no further info
1*. William & Catherine had sons Abraham and James, and one daughter. William 2nd married a Rhoda somebody, producing 3 sons and 4 daughters of whom I have no further info.
William & Catherine's son Abraham died young...during Civil War...no more info.
William & Catherine's son James married Elizabeth Martin Montgomery and had 8 sons....which is the line I am hoping to find information from!
Of course if anyone is from these other male lines (John married to Pamelia Carter, Jefferson married to Jane Connell, and Solomon married to Parilee, that would be helpful too. ANY male with the surname of Hargis who descends from these lines will do.
If you are from this Hargis line, please contact me. As I have said, I am very interested in proving my line. You must be a male Hargis descendant for this to work. I will be glad to get all the information about the DNA kits to you. As I mentioned, several of my other lines are doing this to prove or disprove lineage, and get answers.
If anyone has other proof that my Peter is actually a descendant of James Jay Hargis & Mary Anderson, that would be easier, and cheaper. Bible records, a Will, or whatever. It's just that I have not seen any proof, just hearsay. Census records don't help much, as my Peter is either on two different 1850 census (Madison Co, Ark and Jackson Co, Tn) or there are 2 different Peters. Just depends on how the census taker asked the question to James Jay Hargis in Jackson, Tn about his children. The 1850 census looks like James just named all of his children. Not bothering that they didn't live with him. His son William is shown on the census in James household, but is also in the next household on the census with his own family, unless there is another William Hargis the same age born in the same state. I believe this census taker just screwed up on his questions. Also, the Jackson Tn census was done in June of 1850, and the elder James Jay Hargis died in July...possibly was ill at time census taker was there. There are a number of possibilities as to how errors were made. My problem is that I want to be sure of my lineage before I go back further.
If anyone has any information or would like to make suggestions, or help with this DNA project, please let me know.
