Dear Mr. Land:
I feel certain from the information I have that the George in your Genealogy.com posting is the son of my George Hargraves who was born in 1730 probably in England and lived most of his life in Port Tobacco, Charles County, Maryland. My George, who is my GGG Grandfather, was a large landowner and had six children born in Port Tobacco:George, Jr., Elizabeth, Henrietta, Ann Mary and Theophilus (born 1776 died 8/2/1818).The eldre George Hargraves' will, probated in 1805, shows large pieces of land were goven to his children, but George the son only got $100!He must not have been in good graces with his father!
This George Hargraves is buried in the Hargraves-Smoot Cemetary in Port Tobacco and shows he died the 24th of April, 1805...Aged 75 years. In the same cemetary is buried Mary Hargraves, died Sept. 1, 1793, aged 53 (born 1740), who was most likely George's wife and the mother of the six children mentioned above.
There is definately a connection with Warren County, GA.My information shows that George Hargraves, Theophilus Hargraves (his brother), Hamilton Hargraves (?) and William Hargraves (?) bought and sold slaves and land in Warren Co. in 1802, 1805 and 1811.George Hargraves was a juror in September of 1797 in Hancock County, GA.He also witnessed a passport for a William Huff in Warren Co., Dec. 26, 1806.
Also, George Hargraves (Jr.) received a land patent in the Gallapoora Land District in 1840 thru the Columbia Land Office.
George Hargraves was on the 1805 Land Lottery list in Warren County with one draw which was blank.
George had a bond of the estate of James Atchinson in Warren County 3/2/1807.
The book "The Maryland Semmes and KIndred Families" by Harry Wright Newman states that "George Hargraves married Teresa Thompson, Warren County, Georgia - License Feb. 13, 1806.
George Sr's daughter Henrietta married a man named Meiggs and lived in Columbus, GA.
A George P. Hargraves lived in Elkton, Maryland in 1888 and that year married Laura Barber (age 19), then divorced her less that a year later after discovering that she was still married to a man from an 1887 marriage!
George Hargraves witnessed an indenture May 7, 1805 in Warren Co., GA and is listed on the deed this way: "George Hargraves J. I. C."Do you know what this J. I. C. stands for?
That's about all I know about George Hargraves (Jr.).I am very interested in knowing anything about his brother Theophilus Hargraves who also lived for a time in Warren County with George, Jr.Theophilus is my GG Grandfather. If you run across his name I would appreciate any information about him.I know he was born in 1776 and died August 2, 1818.He married Jane Fowke Hutchinson, daughter of George Hutchinson.Their son, Dr. Richard Harrison Hargraves, is my Great Grandfather and my namesake.
I hope this information will be of some help to you. My best regards,
Richard H. Hargraves
