Trinity, MS, Hargroves & camels
Posted by: Jim Huffman (ID *****0396) Date: July 14, 2010 at 20:53:18

Wm. H. Hargrove of Trinity, MS (Lowndes County), joined the 43rd MS Infantry in the spring of 1862. He brought with him into the service of his State and new nation a camel named "Old Douglas." Does anyone on this Hargrove forum have any information about these Hargroves and Old Douglas? The info I am seeking is probably not online, as I have been researching this camel for some twenty years. I am hoping that some descendants have some previously unpublished documentation about Old Douglas. We believe that Douglas was privately imported ca. 1859 via Mobile, AL, and that he was not one of the US Camel Corps' camels. Any additional info would be appreciated, as we want to tell Old Douglas' story in our book on the 43rd MS Infantry, which is now in progress. Thanks, Hargroves! -- Jim Huffman, Picayune, MS
