Earlier today I purchased at a Fremont, CA, antique store, the subject black and white portrait photo taken by Dore Studio, 2308 Mission St., San Francisco, CA. Written on the back of the photo is the following information:
Mrs. Mansfield
from
Melvin Altos Harkins
Aged-8 1/2 months old
Weight-28 lbs.
2-1-1910
Based on my review of U.S. Census records and other official records on ancestry.com, I have identified the individual as Melvin A. Harkins, Social Security No. 576-46-5237, born May 18, 1909, in California, and died March 31, 1979, in Contra Costa Co., California. His parents were Charles Harkins, born circa 1890, in California, and Myrtle L. Harkins (unmarried name unknown), born circa 1892, in Michigan. Melvin had a younger brother, Knoel, born circa 1915, in California. During 1920 and 1930, the family was living in Honolulu, Hawaii Territory, where Charles was employed as a machinist in the Navy Yard.
