Sgt. Jason Robert Harkins was killed in Iraq on May 6, 2007. Congress recently approved renaming the Cleveland, GA, Post Office in his honor: The US Post Office of Cleveland, GA, was named after him in a Congressional ceremony on Oct. 5, 2008. Article: "Post Office Named After Cleveland [Georgia] Soldier" By Dean Dyer "CLEVELAND [Georgia] - The post office building in Cleveland received a new name Sunday as the facility was named in honor of Cleveland native and American hero Sgt. Jason Robert Harkins, who was killed in the war in Iraq in 2007. Almost 300 people gathered to remember the sacrifice made by Harkins, including some who served with him in Iraq. Cleveland Postmaster Louise Nix said the project of naming the 20-year-old post office in honor of Harkins would not have been possible without the effort of local officials and Congressman Nathan Deal. Nix said it was not a quick process, but worth it. She said, “It’s the least we could do.” Many of those speaking during the ceremony pointed to the community where Harkins came from and the commitment that the citizens have given to honor him. Jason’s father Bob Harkins said, “It’s truly an honor to have Jason come from a community like this. Every soldier that goes into battle takes a part of the community with them, his school, his church, his family, his friends. We want you to know that you did a fine job, because he is truly one of America's best." A portrait of Harkins will also be displayed in the post office as part of his tribute."
