I am looking for any information or photos of my great great grandfather John HARKIN and his family from New Berlin and Norwich, NY. John HARKIN (sometimes spelled HARKINS) married Mary LEWIS at Schenevus, Otsego, NY, on 30 Oct. 1842. They were both originally from Roseville, Otsego, NY (which became Chaseville). On the 1850 US census the family was at Harmony, Susquehanna, PA. On the 1860 US census they were back in NY living at New Berlin, Chenango, NY, and on the 1870 US census at Norwich District 1, Chenango, NY, where he worked in a Tannery. This is the info I have.
John HARKIN - - - - - - - - - - -Born: 1821 in Ireland (one source says Scotland) – Enlisted at New Berlin on 23 Dec 1861 for Co. H 76th NY Volunteer Infantry. He was captured at the 2nd Battle of Bull Run on 29 Aug 1862 and held prisoner until 31 Oct 1862.
Mary “Maria” HARKIN - - - - Born: 1824 in New York
John H. HARKIN - - - - - - - - -Born: 1843 in New York - Died: 27 Sep 1861 of typhoid fever while a member of Co. H, 17th NY Volunteer Infantry – (I believe this may be the John Harkins listed on the Civil War memorial in New Berlin).
George W. HARKIN - - - - - - -Born: 1845 in New York - Enlisted in 1861, discharged in 1863 - Later killed when he was accidentally shot by an acquaintance.
Susan HARKIN - - - - - - - - - - Born: 1847 in New York - Married in 1862 (Her husband lost a leg in the Civil War).
Eliza Jane HARKIN - - - - - - - Born: 1849 in New York – Died: Jan 1862
Waldron “Waldo” HARKIN - -Born: 1850 in Pennsylvania
Elizabeth HARKIN - - - - - - - -Born: 1854 in Pennsylvania - Married in 1870 and lived in Pennsylvania.
Lewis Moss HARKIN - - - - - -Born: 14 Apr 1855 in New Berlin, New York – Married Susan Fell at Madison, Wisconsin in 1880 – Died of the Spanish Flu at Codington, South Dakota on 16 Nov 1918 (Lewis was my great grandfather and used the surname “HARKINS”)
Charles HARKIN - - - - - - - - -Born: 1858 in New York – He was a cigar maker.
Martha Alice HARKIN - - - - - Born: 1859 in New York – Died: 1865
Would anyone know which prison camp John was held at? When and where John, Mary, George, Susan, Waldo, Elizabeth, and Charles died? What Susan and Elizabeth’s husbands names were? Who Mary (LEWIS) HARKINS parents were? Generally any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
