Decatur County Journal-Iowa
Thursday, October 7, l920

JASPER STATZELL, son of GEORGE STATZELL and LOUISA JONES, was born in Warren County, Indiana, Sept. l0, l845. He departed this life early in the morning of Oct. 4, l920, aged 75 years and 24 days.

His mother died when he was but two years of age and he made his home with his grandparents until the second marriage of his father, when he returned to the parental home, where he remained until his marriage in l866 to MISS SARAH HARRIMAN. To this union two daughters were born, WILLETTA and ANNA. The wife and mother died when these daughters were very young and they received the loving care of their grandparents. Shortly afterwards the father came to Iowa, arriving in Leon Christmas Eve of the year, l874.

On Aug. l6, l876, he was united in marriage to MISS LYDIA IRELAND. To them were born two sons, HARRY and GEORGE. His wife dying March 23, l9l6, he spent the rest of his life at the home of his son, HARRY, where he passed peacefully into the beyond just as the Sabbath day had passed.

He was one of the oldest business men in the city of Leon, having been engaged in the produce business for about forty years. In his business he enjoyed a wide acquaintance and the circle of his friends was as wide as his acquaintances.
