Benjamin married Susan E. Brown of Kanawha County in 1852. They moved to Dakota County, Minnesota in 1854, and remained there for nine years. In 1863 they moved to Cleveland, MN, in LeSueur County. Benjamin served in the First Regiment, Minnesota Volunteer Infantry, during the tail end of the Civil War and was honorably discharged in July 1865. Later in his life, he served as a county commissioner for LeSueur County.
