Oddly, it appears this unusual last name, which has been an enigma to some of Kelsay female descendants who married into the Tow and Shuman families in Morgan Co. MO, is NOT unusual to the Kelsay family, since SEVERAL Kelsay descendants, other than James Kelsay, also married into the same family. The spelling is still not clear, however, as I can tell, but it seems to have been pronounced more like Hurshay or Harshay.
ANYWAY, Jane DID make it MO, and in fact, outlived James. She is still alive on the 1850 Census for Morgan Co. MO.Apparently, SOME of the Kelsays lived on the county line of Morgan Co., which became Montiteau Co. in 1850, but the land James and Jane lived on remained in Morgan Co.
What is known, and which added to the confusion, is that Jane's mother remarried after her first husband died to a man named WILSON.Jane's mother was Elizabeth Wishert, daughter of Joseph Wishert, and Jane and second husband, Wm. Wilson had several children together.
A neighbor of James Kelsays in Barren Co. KY was HUGH Harshay, so the name of Hugh, which comes down in my Tow-Kelsay line was from the maternal side of the family.
There were several cross-over marriages between the Harshays and the family of Moses Kelsay, father of James.
The OTHER Hursha marriage in Greene Co. TN WAS the sister of Jane. It's just at the time this went on, the unknown Hursha-Harshay FATHER of Jane was already dead and the mother was living there as Mrs. Wilson.
