Effie,
My family, the Hartsfield family, came to Wake County, North Carolina in the 1600s.I have found that through the years, the spelling of some of the surnames could have changed. Here's what I know about my Hartsfields.I think it might help a little. My Hartsfields went to Tennessee and are included in the Itawamba County Mississippi census in 1841 and into the civil war.My grandmother, who was a Hartsfield, is 97 and her mind is good. She has talked several times about how a couple of the Hartsfield brothers ended up going north and then coming back down from the Illinois/Indiana area and through Oklahoma.Several of my Hartsfield's owned plantations and slaves. In one case, up to 100, I think. There is documentation in the wills of some of the Hartsfields that lists the first names of some slaves. They are online.I will talk with my grandmother about specific names and dates she remembers about the Hartsfield who trekked from the IL/IN area.I know that it would have been after the civil war. Also, if you look on the Gibson County Tennessee site, there is a link to site on black geneaology in that county.A Gene Freeman states that he has information on Hartsfields of the time who were black.Hopw this helps.
