South Carolina Hartzogs

Hi:

My grandfather was named Holman Hartzog and he was from South Carolina. Due to some family disturbances, I never knew Holman, nor was told much about him. However, there is a story in our family that some family members of ours in South Carolina started researching the family history and discovered that the original Hartzogs from our family were German Jews who left Germany because they were accused of cheating at horse trading.

I have no idea if this is accurate information, or just some crazy story. I was wondering if anyone in this forum had ever heard anything like this.

I can say that I majored in German in college, long before I heard this story. After college, I lived in Germany for a while and several Germans told me that Hartzog is a traditionally a Jewish name there. I guess for that reason the story has always had some credibility with me, but again I have never researched this.
