The earliest that I have found for my line is Philip Hertzog who came to Pennsylvania in 1738. He was the son of George Hertzog III of Nordlingden, Bavaria, Germany. Then when family memebers went to North Carolina (around 1800 I think) it became Hartzog, Hartzoge, Hartso, Hartsoe, Hartsaw, etc. When my 2nd great grandfather came to Texas about 1858-1860 he started using Hartzo.
