I am trying to trace the origins of Hugh Cook
(born about 1782, Ireland –died 1847?);
and his wife Henrietta Harvey (born around 1788, Ireland).
My great-great grandfather was their son Hugh, born about 1828 in Ireland;
emigrated in 1847 (according to the 1900 census); spent most of his life
in Middleton, MA; and died 23 May 1904 in Rutland, MA.
His wife was named Mary, b about 1835, Ireland; which means that she
was too young to have emigrated as Hugh Jr’s wife in 1847.
In the 1850 census, the sibling Hugh Cook, (my ancestor) shows up in Middleton, MA
as an unmarried shoemaker:
Whereas in the 1850 Census for Enfield, CT
Henrietta and the remainder of the family show up
Piecing together the two censuses, the first two generations of the immigrant
Cook family have a notional family tree that looks like this:
Hugh Cook, born 1782, Ireland, died 1847
Henrietta Harvey, born Ireland about 1788,
emigrated 1847 with Irish-born children:
James Cook born about 1817
Hugh Cook born about 1828
Samuel Cook born about 1829
Thomas Cook born 1836
Eliza Cook born 1833
Ellen Cook born 1822
In addition, the Enfield census lists a James Cook, born 1849 in CT.
James Cook born 1849 would seem to be a grandchild of Henrietta.
I cannot be sure that James Cook born 1817 is not some relative
other than a son in relationship to Henrietta; or that Ellen Cook
was not the wife of one of the male Cooks and hence the mother
of James born 1849.
However, I still feel confident about the relationship of the
Connecticut Cooks to my ancestor in Middleton, Massachusetts:
• Consider the common family names:
o The death certificate for Hugh Cook of Massachusetts,
gives his parents as Henrietta Harvey and Hugh Cook;
The same parents are cited for Samuel Cook, born 1829 in Ancestry.com at
o The names of Hugh Cook of Massachusetts’ children overlap
the names found in the Connecticut branch:
James Cook born 1852
Henrietta Cook (my great-grandmother) born 1853
Eliza Cook born 1855
Harvey Cook born 1857
Walter Cook born 1859
Alice Cook aka Allice Cook born 1861
Mary Cook born 1863
Hence, as the great-grandson of Henrietta Cook, born 1853, I have three things
I wanted to accomplish with this posting:
First, I hope that the Connecticut Cook family will gain some knowledge of
the existence of Hugh Cook and Henrietta Harvey. Only one descendant of James
Cook of Connecticut has made any postings about it. For all I know the descendants
of James’ siblings are unaware of this.
Second, I’m hoping that someone knows something about my great-great-grandmother
Mary, born in Ireland but almost certainly married to Hugh Cook (born 1828)
in Massachusetts. Who were her parents? Where are her roots in Ireland?
Third, and most important to me, I’d like to know more about Hugh Cook Sr and
Henrietta Harvey. If Hugh Cook Sr died during the famine year 1847,
did that precipitate the family’s move to America; or did he die enroute or soon
after disembarking? Where did Hugh and Henrietta live in Ireland?
Who were their ancestors?
