Elaine,
If this turns out to be your family, Jacob P. Harvill was the s/o Benjamin Franklin Harvill and Eliza Hicks who married in Jersey County, Illinois on May 19, 1866.His father was Jacob and married to Eliza Champ 1834 in Madison County, Illinois. They claim to be from Squire Harvill and Mary Monnette who is supposedly the son of David and Mary 'Patsey' Womack Harville Brunswick Co., VA.
My info is also a mishmash of collected data with very little proof on my part but at least this might give you some clue to start to search and perhaps you can prove the info yourself.
The National ARchives should have a record of James E.'s war record and death. You might also want to check the Social Security deaths and see if he actually lived beyond the war. Also the War Department should have archives with his war record, etc.
Good luck.
