Ozbrooks/Osbrooks/Ausbrooks connection?
Posted by: L. Wayne Ausbrooks (ID *****1043) Date: July 15, 2006 at 22:46:21

I've been trying to trace my family history beyond the following individual but can find no example of this last name being in existence prior to this particular ancestor:

Name: Anthony Ozbrooks
Born: cir 1700, origin unkown
Died: 1752, Halifax, Virginia, American Colonies
Married: Ann/Anne (last name unknown) 1740, American Colonies

The name was soon changed to Osbrooks and then Ausbrooks and I suspect that "Ozbrooks" was just another step in the evolution of this name. Some sources suggest that Anthony came to the American Colonies from England, but, as far as I can tell, this name did not exist there prior to 1750. (One of his decendants did relocate to England with the name "Osbrooks" and this lineage exists there today.)

Along the way, I stumbled across the Hasbrouck (and Hasbrook) family and wondered if there might be any connection. Does anyone here have any information that might support or discredit this theory? Keep in mind that even "Anthony" could have been an Anglicised adaptation of his actual name.

Thanks in advance!
