A biography/family history of Joseph A. Hatch, Harlem, MT, is included in "Montana, It Story and Biography", Vol 3, pages 938 & 939. Joseph was born, 12 Jul 1867, son of Joseph H. and Eliza (Joyce) Hatch, born in Vermont and New York, respectively. Joseph H. Hatch grew up and was a farmer in New York; came to Bremer County, Iowa in 1963, and died there in 1869, age 48. Eliza Joyce was born in St. Lawrence Co., NY, daughter of Jesse Joyce, who came to the US from Ireland. Eliza died in Bremer County, IA, 1912, age 78. At age 22, Joseph Austin Hatch took up telegraphy and began working for the railroads. In 1899, he began working for the Great North at Chester, MT, until 1905, when he left the service as station agent at Harlem, MT. He purchased two ranches where he raised hay, grain, and stock. In 1907, he was elected cashier of the First National Bank in Harlem. In 1917, he disposed of his ranch and became exclusively a banker. On 9 Mar 1896, Independence, Iowa, Joseph A. Hatch married Miss Janet P. Feister, a native of Blackhawk Co, IA, daughter of Roland B. and Nettie (Lohmiller) Fiester.
