I am seeking information about the parents of Jasper Lawrence Hawse.
Jasper Hawse was born on 15 Nov 1835 in Hardy Co., (West) Virginia. He enlisted in the 14th Regiment, Virginia Militia, at the beginning of the Civil War, which became the 7th Virginia Cavalry Regiment in March 1862. In June 1862 the cavalry was reorganized as the 17th Virginia Cavalry Battalion. Hawse served intermittently as a commissary sergeant in the Confederate Quartermaster's Department. A transcript of a diary that he kept during this period is at Virginia Tech Library in Blacksburg, Virginia.
In 1862, Jasper moved to Rockingham Co., Virginia which shares a border with Hardy Co., (West) Virginia. On 21 Dec 1865, Jasper married Mary A. “Molly” Beery in Rockingham County. Between 1865 and 1886, they had fourteen children -- eight sons and six daughters. Mollie died in 1886 – one month after her last child was born.
In the 1870 census, Jasper Hawse’s occupation was listed as carpenter. He served as Principal for the North Main Street School in Harrisonburg for four years. From 1875-83, he served as Rockingham Co. Superintendent of Schools. He then worked as a surveyor for the Shenandoah Valley Railroad. He was the Rockingham County Surveyor from 1887 to 1905.
In 1888, Jasper Hawse remarried Annie C. Scott in Harrisonburg, Rockingham Co., Virginia. He died in 1935 and is buried in the Woodbine Cemetery, Harrisonburg, Rockingham Co., Virginia.
I am confident that Jasper Lawrence Hawse is somehow related to my ancestors in Rockingham Co., Virginia. They were:
Christian Hause (b. 1752 PA)
Christian Hause (b. 1784 PA)
David Hawse (b. 1813 VA)
Zeno Hawse (b. 1842 VA)
Please provide me with anything that you might know about the ancestry of Jasper Lawrence Hawse (b. 1835 VA).
