HAWKES - 19th CENTURY CANTERBURY KENT UK
I have come to an abrubt end quite early in my search for Hawkes ancestors. Possibly some members may/may have been called Hawks.
My father Thomas George Leslie Hawkes was born at Gillingham in 1908. His father Thomas Hawkes was born at Canterbury in 1879 and died on board HMS Bulwark when it sunk in Chatham Harbour in 1914.
My grandfather married firstly Hannah Butcher and then Alice Mead who was my fathers mother, one other son Harold.
Although always thought to have been born in or around Canterbury I can find no reference to the birth of my great great grandfather also Thomas born circa 1846. Thomas married an Elizabeth Kidd c. 1849-1922. Thomas's father believed to have been John Hawkes (a seaman)and Elizabeth's father was Charles Kidd (a soldier). Thomas is understood to have had 3 brothers Arthur (who married Jessie Quested), George and William and 4 sisters Emma, Frances, Alice and Norah.
Maybe I cannot find Thomas Hawkes because he moved to Kent sometime after his birth or possibly because a mis-spelling of his name.
I would be interested to hear from anyone whose research can relate to the above.
Thanks
Graham
