Jennifer, your inquiry had a familiar ring to it, so I asked Bill Hawks, who has written a book on what could be your Hawks family and he replied as follows:
Hi Robert. It is quite possible that he might be of my clan. My great grandfather, Robert Hawks, had a twin brother, George. I never pursued George's "tree branch" very far. Also, I had noticed when I was researching my grandfather's brothers roles in the Civil War, there were several Hawks boys that enlisted in the Union Army that were from --I think Wisconson and/ or Minnesota Territory. How they fit in, or whether they fit in, I don't know.Bill
The Matthew family was very close to this branch of the Hawks family especially in KY.They branched from mine, going to SC, KY, IL, and Iowa by the 1860's.At some point a Joseph went to WI and then returned to IL to rejoin others of the line.Sorry, I cannot help more, but I think you may have a match here.
Robert L. Hawks
