HAWPE Family vs. HAWK in Augusta Co., VA
I've just been "surfing" the genealogy websites and saw your messages on GenForum on this family.
My husband's ancestor was Henry HAWK who arrived in Augusta Co., VA by 1779.Since I've been stymied on his whereabouts before VA, I'm grasping at straws to find it.I've spent many years researching the families that married into or had any dealings with our Henry, but have never found Henry where they originated.
I know that our Henry HAWK was of German ancestry, but the name must have been Anglicized either before or when he went to VA.I've found our Henry's name spelled a number of ways in the records, including HAWP in the Augusta Co., VA records.
I've done extensive research into all of the early records of Augusta and nearby VA counties and in PA and MD.....have read the VA records page-by-page to pick up any "mentions" of the name (of any spelling that I could dream up) even though they weren't the principals in the records and would not show up in the Indexes.
I've picked up the most of the information on the HAWPE (all spellings) along with the others and wonder if the Rudolph HAWPE who arrived in Augusta Co., VA in 1784 might have been some relation to our Henry.Rudolph was first taxed there in 1785 and must have had money to purchase lots of horses and cattle (or brought them with him) as he had 16 horses, colts, mares or mules and 15 cattle soonafter he arrived there.
I made an abstract of Rudolph HAWPE's will and know themakeup of his family and am only interested in him before he went to VA.I also know that he md. Catharine HEILMAN in PA and lived in Lebanon Twp. of Lancaster Co., PA (now in Lebanon Co.).
I also found the will of Adam HEILMAN of Lebanon Twp.,Lancaster Co., PA (now in Lebanon Co.) made on 22 Sep 1770 and probated on 9 Oct 1770 in Lancaster Co., PA.In his will, he names his wife Anna and children:Hans, Catherine, Elizabeth, Barbara, Anna & Eva.He also names his son-in-law Rudolph KAPP (must be HAWPE) and he appoints
Hans HEILMAN and Rudolph KAPP/HAWPE? as his executors.
I thought that it was interesting that, in his will, Rudolph HAWPE mentioned "his land in Maryland".Do you know where that land was located?
I also know that our Henry HAWK's son, Jacob, stated that he had driven a wagon with supplies during the Rev. War in Frederick, MD, but have found no records of the family owning any land there or even being taxed there.
I see that you mention the name of Dwayne Allen Hawpe in many of your messages. Is there any way that I can contact him to see what he wrote about this Rudolph HAWPE?Perhaps there's a clue in there that will help me.
Also, in my PA research, I found a Rudolph HAUP who md. Eve LeFebre in August of 1764.I think that he is the Rudy HOUK (Randy HOOK) who was taxed in East Hanover Twp., Lancaster Co., PA in 1754, 1769 and 1771 (some of the tax records for other years are missing or have not been transcribed).East Hanover Twp. is now in the northernpart of Lebanon Co. and it seems interesting that there were two men of about the same name in that area at the same time.
Hoping to get some feedback on this....
