Hello Carol,

I don't recall a Louis Klaer. Although my great grandfather Joseph Klaer was one of five brothers born in the 1870's in Mishawaka, St Joseph County in northern Indiana. I know there were no Louis's before then. None of the five brothers were Louis, but maybe one of their sons may have been. I know that one of the brothers was Leo Klaer, but he moved to Chicago with his brother Joseph for more opportunity in about 1918. The rest of the Klaer's stayed in the South Bend region until the latter half of the 20th century.
I understand Adam Klaer came to the U.S. in 1853 with his son Jacob from Merchweiler , Saarland, Germany in the southern Rhineland area adjacent to France. They settled in Mishawaka, Indiana near South Bend, which was an area that others from that area of Germany settled. No mention that I know of was made of Klaer's living that far south in Evansville, although the chances of a another unrelated Klaer within that time in Indiana would probably be remote so there must be some connection. The farthest I can go back is to a Franz Klaer born in 1718 in Merchweiler, Saarland, Germany. I believe they may have been country barrel makers and/or blacksmiths. Again Joseph came to Chicago as a young man and my Grandfather George came to Chicago as a young child. His son and my father James Klaer settled in a western suburb, Bellwood, IL where they owned and operated a tavern. Both are deceased. I live in Oak Lawn, IL and have three children of my own.

Rosemary Klaer of Mishawaka, IN provided most of this information.

Hope that helps

John
