Obituary of David Heckendorn:
In New Berlin [PA], on April 26, 1864, aged 39 years, 1 month, 18 days. Internment the following Friday at 10 AM. Funeral very largely attended. Born in Perry Co. PA, where he spent his early life. He was a student at Mifflinburg Academy about 1850 for a few terms. Began his work as a teacher and was very successful. In his spare time he was occupied in hard study. He married Miss Mary A. Rothrock, a daughter of Dr. Isaac Rothrock, of Adamsburg, Snyder Co., PA. In May, 1854, nominated for the County Superintendency, but declined. In 1855 he was appointed in place of J. S. Whitman, resigned. He soon afterward moved to New Berlin, where he resided till his death. In May, 1857, he was elected County Superintendent of Schools of Union Co., PA, and at the expiration of his term in 1860, was re-elected and filled the office very credibly. Devoted eight years of his life to the improvement of common schools. After the expiration of his term of office he engaged in the business of photography. He served in the Army of the Potomoc during the war. In November 1862, he was captured by the enemy and taken to Richmond, VA, where he remained a prisoner for three months, when he was paroled through his father paying a $300 ransom. He arrived home about the middle of March, healthier, apparently than he had been for a number of years., but the ravages of Libby Prison were too great a drain on his vitality, and he became sick in a few weeks, and after an illness of fourteen days, during which time he was delirious most of the time, he breathed his last. His family, the community and the church sustained a heavy loss.
