I have had a long look at the pages and pages of stuff from Dad. I have a candidate for James' parents! No proof, but it would fit. From Parish registers, there is a marriage:
Heckford, Thomas married Elizabeth Goodfellow, 28 Nov 1742 at Morden.
There are no other entries for Morden Heckfords at this period (and none earlier) and if your James was a first son, this could be the family. I found the record of James' burial, also from parish registers.
Heckford, James, aged 78, buried 13 April 1823 at Morden. That gives you a likely birth year of 1745.
There is a Susannah, 1793, and a Catherine, 1809, buried at Morden also.
This is surmise because we don't know if James' parents were from Morden or if he was buried there. The information all comes from a Heather J M Green who lives in Hampshire.
