JONES. Thomas
Thomas E. Jones, Jr., 82, a WWII veteran and. retired supervisor with
DuPont
died Friday, May 12, 2006 at his home in Mt.Pleasant, SC. Born
September 15,
1923 in St. Matthews, SC, he was the son of the late Thomas E. Jones
Sr, and
Mildred Jones (nee Hungerpiller).
A graduate of Charleston High School he served in the US Army Air Corps
during WWII. Tom was shot down over Italy in August 1944 and became a
prisoner of war. His captors made him and his buddies walk for miles
through
the woods in freezing snow. Thinking they were going to be killed, the
men
were told to keep walking. To their relief just ahead they saw US
troops.
The war had ended!
Tom was an instrument and power supervisor with DuPont in Camden. He
previously worked for DuPont at the Savannah River Plant in Aiken. He
was a
multi-dimensional man. He could fix anything and as an avid sailor, he
built
two sail boats. He was an outdoorsman and a talented artist working
with
both watercolors and acrylics. While in Aiken he founded the Aiken
Outdoor
Show which continues today. He was also a member of the Disabled
Veterans
Association
He will be deeply missed by his wife of 60 years, Mildred Hefner Jones,
Mt.
Pleasant; three sons: Mark Edward Jones, Charleston, Gregory Thomas
Jones,
Fairbanks, AK, Christopher Patrick Jones, Las Vegas NV; daughter Susan
Jones
Hardesty, Mt. Pleasant; brother John Legare Jones, Aiken; SC; two
sisters:
Elizabeth Murpny, Waynesville, NC and Carolyn Winn, Watkinsville, GA;
five
grandchildren: Ryan, Kellie, and Jenna all of Fairbanks, AK, Meghan and
Jessica of Las Vegas, and Denise Burgess of Greer, SC; great grandchild
Drew
Shannon, Greer, SC, and dear friend , Marjorie Oyster, Mt. Pleasant.
Private services with military honors will be held. Memorials may be
made to
the Veterans Affairs Office, 3346-D Rivers Ave., N. Charleston, SC

to the Disabled American Veterans 109 Bee St., Charleston, SC 29401.
