Heidel Family Genealogy Forum
I have learned that Heidels who came to Green Lake County Wisconsin during the 1860s came from Kreis Demmin, Pommern.
There can be found a Golden Wedding Anniversary article from a Milwaukee newspaper which makes this clear for one couple among the immigrant Heidels to the Green Lake area. Although difficult to discern exactly, the 'Geborten-und Wohnort' (place of birth or last residence) for my Heidels, who came to Green Lake County after first ‘landing in Michigan’ and seemingly remaining in Michigan for a few years, was recorded on the Hamburg departing ship list to have been Sanzkow, Pommern. Sanzkow can be found to be in Kreis Demmin. Subsequent to making these connections I have found a Heidel who came to Du Page County (Chicagoland), Illinois by about 1871 to have also been from Kreis Demmin. Early descendents of these several Heidel clans remained in Wisconsin & Illinois while some migrated to Minnesota, Iowa, Kansas, the Dakotas and Oregon and later some to Indiana, California, Colorado and Florida and likely other places.
I am most interested to make contact with any Heidel descendent who understands their forefather came from Kreis Demmin, Pommern, Preussen or would like to determine this. Very intriguing is what can be found from the webpage at http://www.charly.ping.de/bibliothek/schwmatrvp-namen.html. This appears to be an extract of the Schwedische Landesaufnahme (Swedish Land Survey) of 1692-1703. The survey contains the names of the inhabitants in each Kreis in Vorpommern (Western Pomerania), primarily the farmers and others of an ‘uppity’ social standing. However, the names might be a Swedish version of the German names (Molt instead of Moll, Been instead of Behm, etc.) This might make it difficult to make a connection. By going to the webpage, the surname Heidel can be found in Kreisen Demmin & Anklam which borders Demmin on the east.
