Cindy:I have a book put together by a cousin, Deborah Ward, on the Hylton family, which lists the descendants of Hattie and David N. Lewis. In your earlier note of Feb. 10 you mentioned the names of some of the children of William and Mary Jane, among which were Edgar and Effie; Harriet may very well have been Hattie, though it hadn't occurred to me that Hattie was a nickname for Harriet! But the clincher is Edgar and Effie..Edgar, as you note, being female. When I was a small child my mother took me to the Tazewell Co. area and I met either Edgar or Effie, a small, thin lady; I must have been about ten, and she wasn't much bigger than I at that time, and I recall she was a little 'standoffish' and I had the impression she wasn't all that happy to see us, but she was polite.Unfortunately, I have no other information on that part of my mother's family but had hoped to get going on it after I finished a branch of my husband's family that I've been working on the past few years.Hattie and David married in Tazewell Co., VA, on Sep. 22, 1904, and we have her birth date as 1885 in Tazewell Co., VA, perhaps on Aug. 28, 1882 (on her grave marker).Hattie died Nov. 19, 1936, in Doran, VA, but again there is a discrepancy as the funeral home gives the date of death as Sep.She and Grandfather David are buried in the Chambers Cemetery in Doran, a very difficult place to find, up on a hillside on an unmarked road. However, I have cousins there who know where the graves are located and who keep their resting sites cleaned, etc.Cousin Deborah still has copies of her book for sale; if you're interested, I can put you in touch with her.I can also put you in touch with cousins there.I'd very much like to know how you fit into the picture, of course. My mother was Flora Belle Lewis, daughter of David and Hattie; she married Burl Underwood, and had four children:myself, Juanita, Galen and Odell. My mother had fond memories of her parents, called them Mommy and Poppy. She was able to tell me the names of her grandparents, Jack (? Black Jack) Helbert and Mary Jane Moore.I've not found anything on the Moores yet either, but then I've not had time to do much searching.I apologize for not responding to your earlier notes, a long story I need not go into here. However, I would love to hear from you and would love to exchange other information:[email protected]
