James Henry Hellams/Hellums/ect.... HELP

Okay guys, I need some input. James Henry Hellams(variant spellings expected!) existed. I have his war records, marriage records, and a newspaper interview with his wife, along with tons of other stuff. HOWEVER! LOL! No one in SC where he spent his entire life as a truck farmer claims ANY relationship to him. Can't find his parents, brothers, sibs, anything. Where could he have come from? My family and I are the only people in the world searching for him. The Helms folks don't claim him either. Does anyone know of any Hellams orphans in Laurens Co., or misplaced souls, or illegitimate births, or adoptions? His eyes were gray (I have his picture), so if he had African american family, genetics say it was a few gens back. What could be the reasons that no one claims him?
He was born (probably) on 12/?/1824, in Laurens Co, according to his only known wife. Think he is buried in Dials in one of the graves where the head stone is not readable. (Yes, weve been there.) He went by the name of Henry, had a load of kids (of which all of their descendents are accounted for), lived an apparently clean life (as clean as a the SC Hellams get anyway), but no one knows where he came from. I get the feeling someone in our ancestry must have strayed outside the lines somehow. HELPPPPP. Any thoughts?
Janie
