For several years I traced the Helm name but was never unable to make any connection to the Helm family that came out of England and settled in Hardin County Kentucky. I grew up in LaRue County Ky so I was sure there was a connection. The family name was spelled HELM but everyone pronounced it as HELLUM. About 6 years ago I found Abram Willhelm in the 1850 Green County Ky census and I have discovered he is my ggg grandfather. My gg grandfather was in the civil war and died of small pox. His wife did not read or write so the census takers changed the spelling to Helm. Is it possible your George W Hellum is actually George Wilhelm?
