Thanks for the message. At least from the 1840's our family has been Helms/Hellums. I think when they moved to Arkansas and Texas the pronunciation took over and thus the name spelled differently. I have our family spelled over a dozen ways in census and other records. To my knowlege we were never in Ky but then one never knows...Migration trail was SC to Tenn to Ala to Miss to Ark and to Tx. Many stayed in Miss.
