My KY family originated in Green County Kentucky. I searched for the Helm Surname and was unable to make a connection in the early 1990's I discovered it was Wilhelm. Where I grew up everyone pronounced Helm as "Hellums". I remember asking my Mother why and she did not know. Thought this might be of help to you.
