Hi Dale, My father's father was Wilhelm john Hellmuth born in Oberlauringen, Germany. When the family moved to Nebraska, the second "L" was dropped but on a chrisening paper for William John performed in Nebraska, the spelling is once again Hellmuth. So to answer your question, yes, I would say the name is German or Bavarian. All the Helmuths that I know about settled in Nebraska. Hope this helps.
