My primary interest lies in the Manchester (United Kingdom) linen yarn merchant William Crane (1722-1808). Crane married Elizabeth Helsby in Manchester Cathedral 18 November 1763 in Manchester Cathedral. The couple baptised a son named Samuel in the Cross Street Chapel 1 November 1764. Elizabeth and Samuel Crane were both deceased by 1781. Elizabeth Helsby's brother was Richard Helsby (died 1801) of Manchester and Ardwick, nr Manchester: a timber merchant who had retired from trade by 1781 through ill-health. Richard Helsby married a daughter of Peter Brooke of Manchester. I wondered if the genealogical researches of Thomas Helsby (antiquarian and local historian of Cheshire, who lived in Bath) extended to Richard Helsby? The only manuscript I have examined (the Helsby Family Scrapbook, bearing Thomas Helsby's 1868 bookplate, preserved at university College Londons Special Collections) did no contain any information, but I think there may be other papers relating to Thomas Helsby that could bear fruit. Two letter books written by William Crane (spanning the years 1781-7 and 1794-1805) survive that include a few references to Richard Helsby and his sister-in-law Sarah Brooke. I wondered if Thomas Helsby had owned them at some point? I'd be grateful for any information/advice about Manchester Helsbys that members of the forum think might be useful. Many thanks, Simon Smith. Notify Administrator about this message?
