John Helton, Jemima Osborne, Knuckles connection
Hi,
Your John and Jemima may be the link I need. What follows is the research I have. The Brittian listed (Obediah's second wife) is, I think, Jemima Osborne mother of my GGGG Grandfather William.
After Obadiah Nuckols' first wife died (Elizabeth Willis, they had just two children: Robert and William), he then married a Brittian (Jemima Osborne?), who (from a previous marriage(s) was the mother of "Uncle" Bill Nuckols). She and Obadiah had just one child - "Aunt" Sally Nuckols. In the following list are the names of Obadiah's stepchildren (Jemima's children): (1) Carlo Helton; (2) Ephriam Helton; (3) William Helton (he took the Nuckols name and was called 'Uncle" Bill Nuckols); (4) Solomon Collins (later called Sol Nuckols); (5) Elizabeth Helton (she married Sol Nuckols). Elizabeth and Sol are the parents of Adkin Nuckols. Adkin had two sons: Ray and Floyd; and (6) Lucy Helton.
Sally Nuckols who was the last of Obadiah Nuckols children. She was a half-sister of "Uncle" Bill Nuckols. Her mother was a Brittian (Jemima), as told by Bell County High Sheriff Jim Helton. Jim Helton was a son of Jonas Helton, who was a son of Carlo Helton and Elizabeth Farmer, (a daughter of Captain Jim Farmer and Susie Skidmore). Carlo Helton was a half-brother to "Uncle" Bill Nuckols. Morgan Helton (son of Carlo Helton) told that "Uncle" Bill Nuckols' Dad was Arnold Helton (John Arnold Helton?). "Uncle" Bill Nuckols had the first store and the first post office on Red Bird, in the headwaters of Red Bird. His great-grandson was Grover Knuckles (born April 7, 1923 - died January 7, 1994), who lived in Blanchester, Ohio. Grover Knuckles, wrote that "Uncle" Bill Nuckols first called the new post office Red Bird, Kentucky. Later "Uncle" Bill Nuckols changed the post office name to Beverly, Kentucky.
Let me know what you think and give me any help you can???
P.S. It is said that Jemima was a full blooded Cherokee Indian that worked fro a couple named Emphriam and Lucy Osborne. Because they treated her so well and loved her, she took the Osborne name.
