I just wanted to follow up on this information.
The 1850 Census (August 26) of Tazedwell, TN, Claiborne County records that Alexander Greer Helton was age 52, so his birth year is normally taken to be about 1798.This seems to be in conflict with the record above which states that he was age 61 on January 7 of 1856 which would make him age 55 in 1850.
I just had a thought that maybe the age '52' in the 1850 Census should be read as '56'.What does look like a 2 doesn't look like any of the other 2's on the page, and in my opinion could be read as a 6.If so there would be no conflict between the two records.Alexander G. Helton would have been born between January 7 and August 26 of 1794 in Kentucky.
Furthermore, this information would not be in direct conflict with the popular idea that Alexander's father was Arnold Helton (ca 1764-1829) who is found in Washington County TN in 1792, then in Sullivan County TN in 1796.Those two counties are 2 1/2 hours away from Knox County KY, the only county in Kentucky to my knowledge where the Helton surname is found in the 1810 Census.
