Hello Mike,
No, I don't know a whole lot about the Hiltons/Heltons before Joseph Helton who married Martha Colvin.
To correct an earlier message, I now think that Joseph would have enlisted in GA rather than SC. Hayman, Elijah, Jeremiah, and Gideon Hilton enlisted in GA, but I have as yet found no connection to any of these people.
Apparently Joseph was born in SC and was in Washington County, GA by 1811, where he married Martha. I have a theory that his mother was married first to a Helton in SC, then married John McDaniel and moved to GA. In the 1830 Pike County, GA, Census, she is listed with her proven children nearby. Also nearby are John Colvin, some Davises, Joseph Helton.
I mention the Davises because Joseph's daughter Mary married Joseph Davis in Pike County, GA, in 1833. In 1850 & 1855 the Davises are living in Tallapoosa County, AL, near Joseph and Martha (Mattie). Joseph Davis's brother was named Gehial/Jehial. Such an unusual name implies a relationship with Gehial/Jehial Helton, but I haven't been able to prove anything.
Other names associated with my line include Pullen and Hardy.
So, it looks like my Heltons started in SC, moved to GA by 1811, moved to AL by 1840 (Kimbrel's, Coosa) to Tallapoosa by 1850. After that my line stayed in AL and others moved to TX.
As far as anyone in my family knows, there are no stories of Native American blood in the lines. JH is my gggggrandfather, and the first Helton in my line was his daughter Elizabeth, my ggggrandmother. We've kinda lost touch with that side of the family over the last 100 years.
I have more details but that's the gist. I have posted most of the info already, but I would be happy to add what I have to any inquires on specific individuals.
Thanks again for your help--please let me know if I can provide any more information for you.
