Dear John,

All I can tell you is that there might be a possibility that this is somehow related to Sally Helton. Ruth and Sally Helton / Hilton was said by their grandaughters to have married Matoy brothers. Sally married several men and we dont know who. Ruth seems to have stayed with Old Man Matoy and claims to have carried nine kids with her out West with the Cherokee in 1834. In those papers it says that Alexander McDaniel is a half brother to Old Man Matoy. It is possible but we cannot prove it at this time that Sally had kids by Alexander McDaniel if you count the Helton girls marrying half brothers. This would explain the Native American ties, and also why you could have two names in one family. One of Sally's uncle's had a Joseph Helton whose descendants filed lots of Guion Miller applications.
Joseph is a common name among our family. At least this theory is worthy to research. Of course a straight line Male Y DNA search will clear this up really quick. Another factor for Alexander McDaniel is that while out west my ancestor Daniel Hilton was always close to him. I suspect a family tie in some fashion.

I know the facts above are true but I dont knnow for sure that is where you have McDaniel and Helton in the same familly..Sally may not have had kids with a McDaniel. I dont know.

Good hunting and thank you for your research.
