I believe that your Alfred Martin Helvey who married Elizabeth (Betsy) Ridpath was the son of Johann Frederick Helvie/Helvey/Helwig and Nancy Cane who were married per the following record:
1798 - Oct. 22: Frederick Helvey married "Nancy Carr (Cane)" (name as entered on marriage record). Her last name on the marriage bond could be "Cane" but is not very legible. Samuel Hutcheson signed as surety. On a separate document, Samuel Hutchenson came before James Charlton, a Justice of Montgomery Co. and "sayeth that he believes Nancy 'Cane' (clearly legible as Cane) is of age by information of Margart 'M Cleahen' and also by her mother's information about eight days ago." [Montgomery Co., VA Marriage Book A, page 78 and 1798 Marriage Bond Folder]
