Joe Helwig, US Navy, 1914-1918 War, Glasgow

I'm trying to find if anyone has any information on a Joe Helwig, who was in the US Navy or Merchant Marine during the 1914-1918 War. My mother was apparently born as a result of an affair between my grandmother Sarah Leyden and Joe. My mother's birth certificate reads Sarah Helwig Leyden as her name with the inevitable blank space for the father. It would be interesting for me to find out details as Joe would be myself and my brother Charles's granfather. Mum is now 82 and lives with her husband of 60 years, Charlie, in Inverness. Her mother apparently met Jo as a result of him being pals with some British Navy/Merchant Navy lads in our family, who were in Glasgow Scotland, UK, on or about 1918-1919.
