Joseph Helwig - in US Navy around 1918

I'm looking for any information on a Joseph Helwig who I believe was originally from Scandanvia but then lived in New Jersey. He was a cook in the US navy and his ship visited Glasgow, Scotland sometime between December 1918 and Jan 1919. My husband's mother is called Sarah Helwig McDermott - she doesn't know who her father was but was told he was a Joseph Helwig and was in the US navy.
thanks - Lydia Aydon, London, England
