My husband, Billy Gene Hemmer is Charles great-grandson. Here's what I have been able to find and verify so far.
I received from St. Francis Convent, which was originally called the Citizen's Hospital and Orphans Asylum, copies of the 2 girls' (Mary) Philomena (born 14 July 1870, died 25 March 1959) and (Margaret) Matilda (born 6 March 1872, died 11 January 1957) obituaries, information giving their mother's name as Barbara HEITINGER, and the names they took and dates they took their vows.
Charles Hemmer(Hammer)and Barbara Heitinger (Heidinger) were married 16 April 1869 in Mansfield, Richland ,Ohio.
Below I've copied over one of the e-mails I received regarding what happened to the other children.
Sister Jackie forwarded your e-mail on to me and here is the information that I was able to collect for you:
All 5 Hemmer children (Mary, Margaret, Joseph, Christian, and Elizabeth) came to the orphanage here at St. Francis on January 17, 1881.
Joseph left the orphanage when he was 18 years old. While he was here he was Confirmed on November 25, 1911 by Bishop Shrembs. His sponsor was J. Haupert.
Christian died on August 17, 1891 of rheumatism.
Elizabeth left sometime between 1904 and 1909.
That is all the information that we have. I hope that it is helpful.
In a newspaper article about Mary Philomena is said that they were left there after the death of their mother, so she died prior to 1881.
In the 1880 Ohio Federal census I've found what I think are the children living with 2 different families. Matilda (Margaret, Maggie), Joeseph and Elizabeth are living with a C. Hemmer age 66 listed as their grand-father. Mary Philomena is with Peter and Mary Frye whom I have reason to believe are relatives. In one of their obits it mentions that Reverend Leo. W. Frye, a cousin, held the mass for her.
On the 1910 Federal census (AR) he marked "NO" to the question "whether a survivor of the Union or Confederate Army or Navy".
Hope this helps.
