George Hemsley (b. 1871, UK)
My line of Hemsley's is as follows:
George Hemsley (b. 1871, Hampshire or Sussex?). We believe he had a brother called Mark, who fought and lost an eye in the Boer War (1899~1902). George came from a farming family who had to sell up in order to pay for life saving surgery in Switzerland (?) (silver plate in the head following a childs golfing accident).
George's partner was an Emily Smith (b. 1875), together their children were:
Jess,
Amos (1903),
Alice (1909),
Fan (b.1910, died aged 18)
Ruth & Mary (1913 twins, Mary died @ 4months),
and Horace.
The family migrated from Ashdown Forest, Catherington (Hants) and East Grinstead (Sussex) to Rolvenden, Kent. In particular, they lived in a Keeper's cottage "Springwood" (now in ruins)and then in "Dockenden" cottage (still there) in Hemsted Forest near Benenden, Kent just after my Nan was born. He was a highly skilled charcoal burner who made a fortune selling his charcoal to Woolich Arsenal but who boozed all his earnings before he got home so the family were hungry.
George died in Jun 1947, aged 76.The problem I have is that, according to the FRC, no George Hemsleys were born in 1871!!!!
Have you got Mark or George in your tree???
rgds . . . Ian
