Hi Donald~ Sounds like you have really put in your time on the Herb's. Any chance that yours are from the Essen area in Germany? I have some sketchy info on my line and would like to be in touch with others researching the same line. Here's what I have :
Charles Herb b Germany, d Aug 1830 Germany, m Maria Klein (according to family bible).
They had G Herb bc 1826, Maria b Aug 1827, Rosina bc 1830, Victor bc1832.
Maria Klein Herb married second John NIcholas Gephart/Gebhardt.
The Herb children listed above came into the port of NY (no parents listed) on the ship Havre, 30 Jan 1847. Rosina m. Phillip Freund (possibly born in Saarbrucken) in Pittsburgh, PA by 1848 and had numerous children and settled there. Victor m Mary (born Switzerland) and settled in Baldwin, Allegheny Co, PA and had numerous children in the Baldwin area. Victor listed his birthplace as Prussa on the census . I believe Maria m Johan Peter Mathieu and she died Pittsburgh in 1854. This is a bit sketchy as other records indicate that she married in Gersweller, Saarbrucken, Germany.

Family tradition states that there is a Krupp connection to either the Freund's or Herb's. I believe this is true based on letters received from Bertha Krupp of Essen, regarding money being sent from Germany about the time of the war to the Freund family.

Please let me know if any of this rings a bell.
Thanks and best of luck in your search!
Brigette
