Hi Mary,
Illiteracy, being what it was then, (and today!), there were bound to be multiple spelling variations with almost any given name.
With HERLING/ HERRLING though, I've found people tend to be defensive on how "it had always been spelled". My Herlings had always spelled it with one "R". I'd called many HERRLINGS nationwide in my research and most all the ones who'd spelled theirs insisted it made a difference to them and theirs ALWAYS had two "R's".
(I suppose it does matter, muchly, as I hate to be called "BENNETT" or BRENNER"!)
In answer to your HERRLING line, no, I can't really help you there as I am of the one "R", HERLING" variety. And most of my basic outline on my Herling lineage came from various bible records, written vital records, obituaries, etc.
As for immigration year/dates, well, I sort of lucked out with stories, family legend, and a thourough search of the Ellis Island, New York database.
Good luck to you!
Mark Benner, (Maine HERLINGs)
