COAT OF ARMS
John Goodwin Herndon while in England in 1936 visited in County Kent, and wrote an article for the Virginia Quarterly. An excerpt from that article reads: "...In addition to the foregoing reference to the Heronden coat of arms, the following items on that subject may be noted. The arms referred to above are described as 'on a shield which is far from modern in Maidstone Church in this county, viz: 1st and 4th Heronden as above; 2nd and 3rd, 3 escollop shells; 2 and 1 argent, impaling argent, on a fesse, falcons volant or.'WhatHasted calls 'arms of a modern date' are those of Anthony Herenden, Esq., in the west window of Lincoln's Inn chapel; argent, a heron azure between three escollops sable. In the Visitation of Rutland, in which county at a later date lived certain members of the Herenden family, the arms are recorded as 'argent, a raven sable beaked or.'"
I have personally seen in the library of the Collage of Arms the original drawing of the Herenden coat of arms made on a Visitation in the early part of the XVIIth
Century. It displayed a heron , not volant, but 'erect, gaping for breath.'"
With but one exception the only motto I have seen below any of these escutcheons has been Vergil's 'Sic Itur Ad Astra', freely translated either, 'Thus is Immortality Gained' or 'This is the Way to Immortality'". ...
He went on to write that after he returned home, in looking over some family papers, "I came across a report written by by one of the descendants of John Herndon, whose will was proved in Charlotte County, Virginia, in 1786, which describes his arms as 'Argent, a heron volant, in fess, azure, membered or, between three escallps sable."Since that John Herndonappears to have been the eldest son of Edward, eldest son of the immigrant to Virginia, William Herndon, it follows that he was entitled to the same arms as those his grandfather bore.We may reasonably deduce, therefore, that william was of the same family as Anthony Herenden of Lincoln's Inn, whose armorial bearings were described as 'Argent, a heron volant azure, between three escallops sable', as mentioned above". ...
