From the book THE PANCOAST FAMILY by Bennett Pancoast, found at the Gloucester County, NJ, Historical Society Library in Woodbury, NJ,
Mary Pancoast .. daughter of William and Mary Copeland Pancoast (born 2/22/1748) married Aaron Hewes in 1770.
"Mary, the youngest child of William and Mary Copeland Pancoast, was born in Burlington County, NJ on 2/22/1748.
Her only sister Sarah had married in Philadelphia in 1763 and Mary, living in Philadelphia was married there, license date May 17, 1770 to Aaron Hewes, most likely a grandson of Aaron (1700-1753) of New Jersey.
From the Quaker records, we find they moved from Philadelphia to Salem, NJ in the spring to 1777, then by 1780 they moved to Hopewell Meeting, Virginia. In 1782 they transferred to Fairfax Meeting, Virginia, and were automatically members in 1802 of Alexandria Meeting when it was set off from Fairfax.Aaron was made a trustee on the deeds when ground was purchased in 1804 and also on committees.
Mary and Aaron returned to Philadelphia to live in 1815.Their daughters Lydia, Sarah and Mary Ann were also in Philadelphia where Mary died 1/24/1829.The date of Aaron's death has not been found.
In the Alexandria 1799 Census is listed Aaron Hewes, 'hatter' with wife and two children.
The list of their children is incomplete ..
William .. buried 2/6/1772 - 4 months
Lydia .. born before 1777 - married by 1788
Samuel .. born before 1777 - probably died before 1780
Sarah .. born 1777/80 - married Powers
David .. born 1780/82
Aaron Jr. .. born after 1785 - married by 1809 - married 2nd by 1815 Virginia.
Mary Ann .. Philadelphia to Ohio 1832
ref: E.A.Q. 11-379-559-78-747-708 etc.
Vol VI 405-495-513-725 etc.Hopewell Friends History, Virginia."
According to the libarian at Gloucester HSMr Bennett Pancoast spent most of his life researching this book .. it is two volumes .. almost 900 pages.
The Gloucester County Historical Society Libaray in Woodbury is a wonderful source of information on families that settled southern New Jersey.
