Lawrence Hickman, Baltimore County, MD, ca. 1797
Lawrence Hickman died in Baltimore County some time before December 12, 1797 when his orphans, Anna, John, Jacob, and Joseph chose David Hickman as their guardian. This information can be found in a proceedings in Baltimore County Orphans Court, #3. David was probably the oldest son of Lawrence and Elizabeth Hickman.
The Baltimore County court records (Land Commission Papers) contain two petitions by Henry Hickman to partition the estate of Lawrence Hickman. The first is dated 28 Sep 1816, the second 1 Jul 1822. These petitions show that Lawrence Hickman died intestate in Baltimore County leaving the following named children: David Hickman, Susan Hickman (who died intestate], Nancy Hickman who married William Weaver, John Hickman, Jacob Hickman, Abraham Hickman and Henry Hickman. There is no mention of the son Joseph, so it is presumed he died young. The commissioners appointed to divide Lawrence's estate (John Schunck, Matthew Murray, Pilkington Codd,Christian Mumma, and Thomas Johnson) found that Lawrence Hickman only had 5 acres of land at his death, too small to divide among the heirs, so it was valued at $300. The 5 acre tract, called Sheridans Bottom, was probably the same one given him by his father-in-law, David Mumma, on 19 May 1785. Lawrence Hickman's wife was Elizabeth Mumma, who was born 4 Apr 1754 in Lancaster County, PA. She was the daughter of David Mumma and his first wife, Anna Kauffman. David Mumma moved to Baltimore County, MD about 1770. There he married, as his second wife, Barbara Hickman, who is probably some connection to Lawrence Hickman. Elizabeth (Mumma) Hickman, widow of Lawrence, was still living 6 Jan 1823, according to the land petition.
The first record I have of Lawrence Hickman is from 1774, when he was listed as a taxable in St. Paul's Parish, Baltimore County. There is a Baltimore County bond binding John Chank (Schunck), Lawrence Hickman, and Philip Crocious "all of Baltimore County," that was signed and sealed 11 Sep 1781. Chank or Schunck was the husband of Ann Mumma, sister of Elizabeth, who was Lawrence Hickman's wife. Lawrence appears in a 1783 assessment of Baltimore County, Back River Lower Hundred. He also appears in the 1790 Federal Census, Baltimore County, Patapsco Lower Hundred. He died about 1797. His widow Elizabeth appears in the Particular Assessment Lists for Baltimore and Carroll Counties, 1798, when she was listed with 7 acres in Back River Lower Hundred.
The Baltimore County Register of Wills (Indentures) for 1808-1811 (p. 54) shows that on 23 Sep 1808, there was an indenture of apprenticeship wherein the Justices of the Peace bound Henry Hickman, "with the consent of his mother Elizabeth," to John King of the City of Baltimore Windsor Chair maker, for a term of six years. The indenture was signed by King. This Henry was the son of Lawrence Hickman and his wife Elizabeth Mumma.
Baltimore County marriage records show that Nancy (Anna) Hickman married William Weaver 10 Jul 1804. A John Hickman, possibly son of Lawrence, married Ann Everett in Baltimore County 24 Jul 1810.
I would be interested in hearing from anyone who can help identify this Lawrence Hickman family, especially who Lawrence's father might have been.
